Beginners Guide To Starting Your Own Record Label

Not long ago it was generally accepted that, for musicians to get their music produced, they either had to pique the interest of a record company, or else pay them a hefty sum. Tragically, this has led to many a talented musician giving up and never fully realising their potential.

The good news is that, thanks to useful new technologies and platforms, it is now entirely possible to start producing your own independent music from home.

Step 1 – The Hardware

For a basic home-setup you will need the following equipment:

  • A desktop PC or laptop that has at least 4GB of RAM, a quad-core processor, a good sound card, and an operating system that you are familiar with.
  • At least one quality microphone if you plan to record.
  • A good set of quality headphones.

If you are in band or play multiple instruments, you will likely also need:

  • A multi-channel mixing desk.
  • A set of studio monitors.
  • More than one quality microphone.

It’s worth noting that the more you pay for the basic equipment, the better-quality you will ultimately have in the end, so it should be considered an investment.

Step 2 – The Software

The next step will be finding suitable software and learning to use it. There are plenty of great music programs available for purchase, otherwise free and open-source alternatives are also available if you are cash-strapped or just want to learn.

Finding a suitable space might be easy if you are “quietly” making electronic music on your PC, using headphones and few external devices or instruments. You could do it in your bedroom if you want.

Otherwise, as most bands are generally fully aware and familiar with, an adequately sound-proof room will be necessary.

Step 4 – Experiment

Experiment with your setup to find the best balance of sound and quality. This can be the most fun and rewarding part of it, where you can explore and be creative as you go, perhaps even creating something entirely new.

Step 5 – Upload Your Music

Making all this possible in the end of the day are the host of popular online music vendors that are now catering to independent musicians. Some of those behind this are Apple Music, SoundCloud, Spotify, and many more.

Step 6 – Spread The Word

This is arguably one of the hardest steps as you will need do your own marketing. With social media and plenty of other tools available though, it’s entirely doable. The great thing about the online platform is that once you get a certain amount of attention, things can blow up almost instantly.
